Ben Hogan One year, Ben Hogan was playing at the Rochester Open. In the first round he shot a 64 with one double bogie, the lowest scorecard of the day. After the round, Mr. Hogan went straight to the practice tee, while his contemporaries retired to the 19th hole for drinks and cigars. After a typical afternoon of drunken debauchery, several golf pros emerged from the course bar just as it was approaching dawn. Just as they were stumbling out, they heard the unmistakable sound of golf balls hitting metal. They walked to the practice green and saw Mr. Hogan hitting balls. One of the pros, Jimmy Demaret, asked, "Ben, you just hit a 64 with ten birdies on your scorecard- what are you doing here?" Ben turned around and said, "Jimmy, there's no reason why a man can't birdie every hole." Ben Hogan is one of the Institute's most respected sportsmen because he was able to overcome his small amount of talent and slight physical frame to become the greatest to ever play the game.
