There is little love lost between progressives and Big Corporations. Many Big Corporations, such as Wal-Mart and about a thousand others, are burnt at the rhetorical stake for their failure, inter alia, to provide great (or any) medical and dental benefits or a high-growth 401(k). Progressives generally believe that the market is to blame for this undesirable deprivation of basic freedoms, and that the only solution is more progressive regulation.

Five Ways to Solve America’s Health Care Crisis Without Accruing Massive Debt

It is widely conceded by pundits of varying ideological stripes that America faces a health care crisis. Both liberals and conservatives tout the problem; sadly, few quality solutions are proposed. The greatest problem within this crisis, also admitted widely, is the high cost of health care and health insurance.

Liberals set about to “solve” this problem by proposing universal, government-provided health insurance. This, of course, only compounds the problem and does nothing to lower real costs. Presumably liberals feel high costs are a problem when they are borne by citizens as health care consumers, but somehow acceptable when they are borne by citizens as taxpayers. Presumably they also somehow think this is a rational position. Either way, it’s worth little.

Giving America's consumerist culture free health care is foolish

It is unquestionable that America is a consumerist culture. This position is hardly exclusive to the screeds of anti-capitalist leftists; it is a reality that manifests itself in the daily life in our nation. The law of demand, of course, states that a lower price induces higher consumption. Americans give themselves this economics lesson on a daily basis as they obligingly demonstrate their insatiable appetite for all things cheap, and most of all, all things free.

The free sample is perhaps the crown jewel of business' recognition of American consumerism. Here is our product, says ABC Corporation. We're going to offer it for free because we know you'll try it if it's free. And how right they are. The great mass of American consumers wilfully and voraciously snap up these products that are offered free of charge. Why not?
